Why Accounts Die: Risk, Not Analysis
Ask any trader who blew an account "what happened?". You'll usually hear "the analysis was wrong" or "the market suddenly reversed". But open their trade history and you'll find a completely different story: not bad analysis, but one or two trades that were bigger than the account could take.
Excellent analysis might give you 50–60% winning trades. That means 40–50% of your trades will lose, however good you are. So the real question isn't "how do I avoid losing?" — that's impossible — but "how do I lose in a way that doesn't kill me?". That is the whole science of risk management.
Example: two traders, the same trades
Two traders take exactly the same 10 trades with the same results: 5 winners and 5 losers, each win twice the size of a loss. The only difference: the first risks 1% per trade, the second 20%. But the order is unlucky: the five losses come first.
| 1% risk | 20% risk | |
|---|---|---|
| After 5 losses in a row | $951 (−4.9%) | $328 (−67%) |
| After 5 wins (each = 2× risk) | $1,050 ✓ | $1,764 … if they held it together |
On paper the second one made more. In reality? A trader who just lost two-thirds of the account in five trades won't take the sixth calmly. They'll close it early, double the size for revenge, or quit. The first barely felt the bad run and kept following the plan.
